Chapter 3
"Must we?" Jacob whines.
You would be whining too if the moment you finished unpacking, on Embry's command, you are informed you must dress for Marcus' entertainment.
"Jake, I know what you're thinking. But this reception is on Emmett's behalf. When he mentions yoju are here, but not there, how will that look?"
"Why would you welcome someone the night they moved temporiarily? Don't they know how much work you have to bring this house "up to standard"."
Yes, those were the very words Emmett used before locking himself in his study. Letting Embry do the unpacking.
Embry worries his lips.
"Please, Jake. for me?"
He's going to hear that a lot isn't he?
----- ----- -----
At least Embry had taken him shopping before they traveled. His jorts would have never fit in here.
But he felt uneasy for another reason. The guests all had the same amber eyes and pale skin as Emmett. Yet they weren't all family.
How?
Jacob watches Embry be paraded around by Emmett. Jake will give Emmett that. He seemed very, insanely pleased at being Em squared.
It's good to see his best friend aptly treated. He is a prince and he found his king to bring him into this world.
Jake looks around trying to keep in a sigh. He can't have anyone thinking things. Thinking that he isn't impressed. Thinking that he isn't loving this. Telling Embry his average friend should have been left at home.
'Average?' A voice asks in his head.
Thta -- that isn't Jacob's internal dialogue.
'Ed.' A warning femalee voice scolds.
'What?'
Jacob looks around. This time with purpose. He locks eyes with a pale, normal pale, not freakishly, pale woman.
She smiles blushing.
She looks up towards her partner.
The man's eyes darken from their amber to a blazing black.
'that's not the right adjective for black.' Jacob tells himself.
'Wouldn't you know, Mr. Black?' The voice says.
The man smirks. Then his face drops.
'Not a man.'
'Oh, sorry.'
Jacob starts to drop his glass at the conversation he, very much, seems to be having in his head.
The glass is grabbed by the ... uh person.
'Wasn't he 20 feet away?'
'Not a he.'
'Sorry. Again.'
Jacob's eyes widen.
'My apologies for my partner. They can't hold back.'
'Bella, he made us hear each other!'
Jacob hands the person his drink and starts to walk away.
'I don't know what is happening but I expect to see you tomorrow night. You will explain all this.'
'All?' The woman asks.
'All.' Jacob repeats and walks away.
Chapter 4
There's a knock on the door as Embry and Jacob put on their hats.
Embry raises an eyebrow at Jacob. He shrugs.
He didn't tell Embry about last night. But they were supposed to come in the evening. Not at noon. No, this was not the couple - pair - people.
Embry opens the door.
A blond walks in.
Embry steps in front of Jacob. As protective as he has been lately. So annoying.
"Excuse me sir. What business do you have in my house?"
The man - maybe Jacob should stop gendering people - freezes.
Like looks like a statue, perfectly still, freezes.
"My apologies. I'm Emmett's cousin, James. I thought my uncle called ahead about my coming by."
"Oh. Um, Emmett isn't here." Embry offers, confused.
"I'm not here for him."
Embry and Jacob share another look.
"Excuse me, I'm here to be your guide. People get lost all the time. I'm here for the next month. A fortnight will be spent with you two."
Jacob sneers, then schools his face before James makes eye contact with him.
"Okay." Embry says slowly. "That sounds fun."
"Fun?" Jacob can't keep from tumbling out of his mouth.
"Is it not?" James asks.
"I think Jake and I spend enough time together already. A third would be nice."
"A third is always nice." James agrees.
Is -- is James trying to flirt? Seduce Embry? His cousin's husband?
Then James looks at Jacob.
Oh, shit.
No.
Jacob has people already.
Or he wants them at least.
Chapter 5
Jacob had been kept from going home until midnight.
He hopes his guests aren't too people. That they would consider anything until 5am the night before tonight.
However, despite him staying up until 6am, they did not come by. At breakfast he learned that Emmett got a notification at 9:37pm from the doorbell. Because of course Emmett had also been out of the house.
----- ----- -----
On day 3 of being basically abducted by James, Jacob felt he would scream.. He was hot, he was tired, he was cranky.
And he wanted to see Bella and Ed again.
James, picking up no hints, took them, with his chauffeur Seth, on a picnic.
A picnic?!
Outside in July. When Jacob had mentioned being hot.
Embry didn't seem concerned about his friend.
"Are you alright?" Seth asks 20 minutes into the lunch.
"I'm going on a walk." Jacob shrugs off.
"Seth." James commands.
Oh, fuck off.
Jacob sensed Seth walking a ways behind him. He would be glad not to get lost but he just wanted to be alone.
No.
He wanted to be with them.
Was he losing his mind?
Seen them once and he can't breathe without them?
'Jake.' Their voices came.
He rushed ahead, the park turning to a forest, Seth still close behind.
And he saw them.
Sitting in a meadow Ed and Bella smile at him.
'Edward.' They introduce themself.
Jacob feels his world spin before he lands paws down at the forest floor.
Paws?
Chapter 6
'Jacob stay calm.' Bella instructs.
'I'm not panicking. I'm just a huge dog. So what?'
'Wolf.' Edward corrects.
'Shit, Edward. That's. Not. Helping.' Jacob screams.
'Jacob.' Seth commands.
And Jacob feels that command deep into his bones.
'I'm fine.' He feels better somehow.
He takes a deep breath.
He smells a woodsy scent from himself and from behind. Seth.
Turning he sees another wolf.
'The fuck?'
'I thought it would help?' Seth offers.
'To see another fhuge wolf where a person used to stand?'
'Yes?'
'Gods.'
'Jake?' Bella inquires concerned.
'I'm not freaking out!' Jacob repeats.
'Um.' Edward draws out.
'Okay I am. But mainly because you two smell so amazing. Edward like vanilla and Bella like cinnamon. And oh, gods. That's creepy as fuck.'
'I like your scent. And Bella's.' Edward comforts.
'Shit is creepy, Edward.' Jacob thinking, doubling over with laughter.
Then he's human again.
Naked.
Her yells.
Edward covers him with a long and light blanket.
'Thank goodness for Alice.' Jacob hears Bella says.
'Who is Alice?' He thinks before passing out.
